It is as if we were supine or sleeping or lying down. That is the way I felt Black People were largely in the Thirties. We were apathetic, we were not militant, we were not socially conscious, we were not altogether articulate. — Margaret Walker in Black World Magazine (1975), comparing black people in the thirties to the sixties when she believes consciousness grew. Wonder what she would say about us today?
